MDC’s Miami Book Fair and The de Groot Foundation Announce an Award for Unpublished Novellas

Miami, Oct. 10, 2016- The 33rd edition of the Miami Book Fair, the nation’s finest and largest literary gathering presented by Miami Dade College, (MDC) has partnered with The de Groot Foundation to launch the Miami Book Fair/de Groot Prize that will be awarded to an author for an unpublished novella.

A novella is a work of fiction between 17,000-40,000 words. The winner will receive a $6,000 cash award, publication and an expense-paid trip to the 2017 Miami Book Fair. The two runners-up of the MBF/de Groot Prize will each receive $3,000.

“At Miami Book Fair, we are tremendously honored that Mr. and Mrs. de Groot chose to partner with our organization to identify and support writers at the beginning of their careers,” said Lissette Mendez, director of programs.

The de Groot Foundation has a proud history of supporting the Novella. First through the Paris Literary Prize in partnership with Shakespeare in Company in 2011 and 2013, and now through the Miami Book Fair/de Groot prize for the Novella. There were more than 600 submissions from across the globe in 2013 and we anticipate similar success now that the prize calls Miami home.

“We are delighted to be collaborating with the Miami Book Fair to discover and encourage talented unpublished authors,” said Charles and Clydette de Groot, Co-Directors of The de Groot Foundation.

“Writers who are starting out, especially those writing novellas, which are not usually as commercially viable, need the kind of support generous, caring individuals, such as the De Groots are so willing to give,” said Delia Lopez, director of operations.

Applicants may submit their unpublished novellas May 1- June 15, 2017. Prize and submission details will be available on the Miami Book Fair website on Nov. 1, 2016.  Winners of the award will be announced at the 2017 Miami Book Fair.
