MDC’s Hospitality Institute to Host Job Readiness Training & Career Fair April 4-7

Miami, March 16, 2017 – As part of its commitment to providing job readiness, hospitality and culinary skills training and job referral assistance to the residents of Miami’s inner city neighborhoods, the Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Hospitality Institute will once again host a four-day Job Readiness Training & Career Fair, April 4-7, at the Greater Bethel A.M.E Church in Overtown. Individuals must register for the free training by March 29 and complete all three days of the training to be eligible to attend the job fair on Friday, April 7.

Registration is open to Miami-Dade County residents, with a focus on Overtown, Downtown Miami, Liberty City and surrounding areas. Registration is required and ends March 29.

The training sessions are held from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., Tuesday April 4 to Thursday, April 6.  Experts from the hospitality industry, MDC instructors, and motivational speakers will lead the training sessions and cover topics such as resume writing, interviewing techniques, customer service, professional attire, financial literacy, food safety certification, and much more. This training session will include a Q&A panel discussion featuring representatives from Go Brightline, MDM Development & Marriott Hotels, Greater Miami Conventions & Visitors Bureau, Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association, Greater Miami and The Beaches Hotel Association, Port of Miami, Miami Aviation Department, and other Hospitality & Travel Industry Organizations at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 4.

Staff from MDC and the Hospitality Institute will also be available to assist with information on educational opportunities, including GED certification, MDC admissions and enrollment, and college financial aid.

“The Hospitality Institute prepares and empowers underserved inner city residents to connect to Miami’s growing hospitality job market by offering no cost training, and assisting with job placement upon training completion,” said Shelly Fano, executive director of MDC’s Hospitality Institute.  “We are proud of our many success stories of participants who have completed training and found employment.”

The training program concludes on Friday, April 7, 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., with a completion ceremony and a career fair exclusive to Hospitality Institute participants and alumni. The career fair will feature employers from the hospitality industry including hotels, restaurants, and attractions.

Established in April 2008, the Hospitality Institute at MDC operates under the umbrella of the Miami International Hospitality Center.  Job readiness training is held four times throughout the year and is currently funded by the City of Miami Southeast Overtown / Park West Community Redevelopment Agency.
