Miami Dade College to Host Biggest Maker Faire to Date April 8 – 9

Maker Faire Miami is open to makers of all ages and the entire community to enjoy!

Miami, April 3, 2017 – Miami Dade College (MDC) students will show South Florida audiences how much creativity can be accomplished at Maker Faire Miami, Saturday and Sunday, April 8 – 9, at the Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami. They will join hundreds of other exhibitors and thousands of attendees at this dynamic DIY event.

One group of talented MDC students, who have been doing research this semester at Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) renowned Media Lab, will present a demo of self-driving cars. Another group is working on several 6-inch replicas of the Maker Faire’s robot mascot. Each robot will be made of identical bases and covered in a variety of material. A third group is constructing large-scale replicas of Wolfson Campus and downtown buildings using Legos, which later will be part of a virtual city.

Learn the secrets of 3-D modeling using Maya software and how games are created with Unity, a multi-platform game development tool, presented by MDC’s Miami Animation and Gaming International Complex (MAGIC). MDC’s School of Entertainment, Design and Technology will demonstrate how to use forced perspective to create movie magic, produce music and podcasts, create a home photo studio, and light sets using foam board.

The Miami Fashion Institute, housed at MDC’s Wolfson Campus, invites fairgoers to bring old or discarded items to transform them into something new. Miami Culinary Institute students will be sharing culinary hacks, such as “sous vide,” a technique that uses vacuum-sealed bags to infuse food with flavor. MDC art faculty from several campuses will demonstrate how to work with clay, jewelry metal forming, mixed media assemblage, wax casting relief printing, and paper collage.

This year’s most anticipated exhibitors include Josuhe Pagliery, creator of Savior, Cuba’s first independent video game to be released 2018; Moonlighter Miami fabrication lab, co-working space and STEAM learning lab; RAD Domes, which specializes in the construction of geodesic wooden domes with PVC textile cover; and StarBot Robotics, among many others.

MDC will host Maker Faire Miami in partnership with MANO Americas, and in association with Maker Media.  The event will feature inventions and interactive exhibits across the exciting maker movement spectrum.  With Maker Faire Miami, the city joins an elite band of select cities around the world to host large-scale Maker Faires in 2017, including Rome, Paris, Tokyo, Atlanta, New York and Shenzhen.

Maker Faire Miami at MDC will convene makers from Latin America and Spain to fulfill its vision as a true “Maker Faire of the Americas.” Maker Faire Miami is independently organized and operated under license from Maker Media, Inc. For complete details, please visit http://miami.makerfaire.com.
